This is a Tortoiseshell butterfly, photographed feeding off a thistle (not visible in the photo!). (Stourhead Estate, Wiltshire).
This Burnett Moth has some sort of attachment to its body and legs. Viewers of this site have suggested they are parasitic mites. (Whitesheet Down, Wiltshire)
