This was very much a flying visit, taking place over three days including travel.
There are just two galleries, one briefly documents the trip, while the other gallery displays the twenty images that were used for the outdoor exhibition and elsewhere.
Once you have opened the gallery, click on an image to see a larger version of it. You can then scroll through the rest of the gallery.
To get back to this page from an individual photo, click on the cross in the top right of the photo window, then click on the link next to the gallery title in the top left of the gallery window.

Around Brno I was collected at Prague Airport and driven to the Hotel Passage in Brno, arriving around 6 pm. Having settled in to the hotel I wandered down the street and came across an open space called Moravian Square, at the other end of which were some typically Czech builidings, including a church. Having wandered round that area for a while I returned to the hotel for a meal and rest. The following morning I was taken to the TESCAN establishment where I met various members of the commercial and technical teams and was able to discuss in detail a possible extension for my SEM. Somewhat later, accompanied by my TESCAN hostess and a colleague, we visited the outdoor exhibition of my micrographs, which was in Moravian Square, a short distance from the route I had taken the day before! We also visited a shopping centre where a very large inflatable model of a tardigrade was on display, with one of my micrographs of a tardigrade nearby. Tardigrades are microscopic creatures, also known as "water bears". The reason the model was on display was that 2023 was the 250th anniversary of the discovery of the tardigrade by Johann August Ephraim Goeze, a German Zoologist. We arrived at the Brno Planetarium, where my presentation was to take place. There was time for a quick check that the technical arrangments were working, before I was introduced to two presenters from the local radio station, who interviewed me about my work. Then it was time to meet the approximately 80 people waiting in the auditorium. Those interested can find a video of my presentation on YouTube, at This Link. My talk begins at around 2 minutes from the start. |

Gallery of Electron Micrographs Given the significance of the tardigrade in 2023, TESCAN were keen for me to include a number of images of tardigrades among my collection. Fortunately I had carried out some research into these previously, including discovering techniques for preparing the specimens without them disintegrating. Other subjects, chosen at my own discretion, included a selection of images of arachnids, insects and pollen grains. All the images were, naturally, taken using my TESCAN MIRA SEM. |
